Globalisation: Knowledge specifications
According to the Geography curriculum KS3 pupils should 'understand, through the use of detailed lace-exemplars at a variety of scales, the key processes in: human geography relating to international development'.
Students will need to learn about the following at KS3:

- What globalisation is.
- What/how factors can encourage globalisation e.g. transport development, ICT development.
- The idea of global trade and the differences in trade between MEDC's and LEDC's.
- What an NIC is and how this affects trade.
- What MNCs and TNCs are, including examples. Why they locate where they do.
- The different stages of the global product chain, including examples: design, raw materials, manufacturing, consumer.
- The impacts of global trade: social, economic and environmental.
- Ethical issues of global trade, including the idea of fair trade and what sweatshops are.
Students will need to learn the following at KS4, based on the AQA specification:
- Why call centres would locate abroad.
- The advantages and disadvantages of TNCs.
- What characteristics are related to industrial growth.
- What de-industrialisation is and what characteristics it is associated with.
- How government legislation affects industry including; health and safety, working hours, wages, tax and strikes.
- China's development and a consideration of it becoming the new economic giant.
- The impact of world population growth on energy demands, with focuses on sustainability.
- Social , economic and environmental impacts of increased energy use.
- What is renewable energy and examples of it.
- Ways of limiting pollution including carbon credits and local schemes.
- The increased food demand and the carbon footprint it leaves. Particularly political, social, economic and environmental issues with a case study.
